    Meralco’s 400-MW mid-merit CSP attracts six

Six generation companies are interested in supplying the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) 400 megawatts of mid-merit power that the distributor requires by next year. This was three times more than it plans to acquire.

“Meralco’s bids and awards committee received an aggregate offered capacity of 1,220 MW from six interested bidders,” said Lawrence Fernandez, Meralco vice president and head of utility economics department, in a message to reporters.

He would not identify the power suppliers.

This relates to 400 megawatts of electricity that Meralco in June sought to find under the competitive selection process or CSP. This 15-year power supply agreement (PSA) starts on 26 August 2025.

Terms require a minimum contract of at least 150 MW and may come from a single or a portfolio of power plants.

The electricity must be 100 percent available for 15 hours Monday to Saturday during the peak hours of 9 a.m. to 12 midnight and 10 hours on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 12 midnight.

Mid-merit power plants adjust their output throughout the day as electricity demand ebbs and flows and are usually natural-gas fired, hydro or diesel facilities.

A pre-bid conference is scheduled on 11 July and the bid submission deadline on 9 August 9 for this CSP.

Jose Ronald Valles, Meralco senior vice president and head of regulatory management, said the CSP will be open to both greenfield and brownfield power suppliers.
