Electricity has come to Taganak where green and hawksbill sea turtles nest

The National Power Corp. (NPC) on Thursday said more than 1,000 households will benefit from the operations of three, 50-kilowatt modular diesel generator sets of the Taganak diesel power plant in Tawi Tawi.

The NPC said the facility launched only in June in the farthest island at the southwestern tip of the country.

The NPC said the Taganak is one of seven islands in the Turtle Islands group in the Sulu Sea close to the maritime border with Malaysia.

Taganak is renowned for its beaches and ecological significance as its remote location and relatively undisturbed environment contribute to its status as an important conservation area and nesting site for sea turtles, particularly the endangered green sea and hawksbill turtles.

Tawi Tawi governor Yshmael Sali said the project is expected “to usher in positive change and progress for the residents of Taganak, enhancing their quality of life and creating new avenues for development.”

The NPC supervises the 281-member Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG), which are power plants in islands and communities not connected to the main transmission grid and powered mostly by diesel-fired generators.

NPC also manages the transmission systems of island provinces like Palawan, Catanduanes, Masbate, Marinduque and Mindoro.
