Maynilad subsidiary completes P50M facility upgrade in Albay

Maynilad Water Services subsidiary Philippine Hydro Inc. (Phil Hydro) has completed the P50 million upgrade of its water treatment plant in Legazpi City.

The company said the facility in Albay produces potable water for 22,000 households in the area.

According to Maynilad, the upgrade required the inclusion of a clarifier in the treatment process to enhance the removal of sediments from raw water, making the treatment process faster and more efficient.

With the upgrade, the facility sustains its production output of 30 million liters per day even during the rainy season when the level of turbidity in raw water supply increases.

Phil Hydro said the initiative also addresses the impact of climate change on the quality of the raw water supply coming from the Yawa and Pawa rivers which serve as source of the city of Legazpi.

“The increased turbidity of the river water exacerbated by man-made activities upstream and soil erosion during heavy rains necessitate this additional water treatment process. The upgraded facility will ensure consistent water quality and supply, even under these challenging conditions,” said Mirla De Leon, Phil Hydro general manager.

Phil Hydro operates under a 25-year contract to supply treated water to the Legazpi City Water District responsible for operating and maintaining the distribution network and selling the water directly to households in the area.

Phil Hydro also owns and operates water treatment plants supplying treated bulk water to the Norzagaray Water District, Santa Maria Water District and Bocaue Water District in the province of Bulacan.

The company likewise supplies water to Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya and to Rizal, Nueva Ecija.

All Phil Hydro facilities are under public-private partnership contracts with the government, either directly contracting the local government unit or with government-owned and controlled corporations, such as water districts.
