Renewable energy developer Berde Renewables has partnered with Big E Food Corp. (BEFC) in installing a 2.6 megawatt-peak rooftop solar energy system at BEFC’s production facility in Meycauayan, Bulacan.
The initiative, established under a solar power purchase agreement (PPA), is set to play a vital role in BEFC’s strategy to reduce operational costs and environmental impact.
The project is seen generating over 3,681.77 megawatt-hours of energy annually, enabling BEFC to save significantly on electricity expenses while simultaneously reducing its carbon emissions by approximately 2,500 tons per year.
Patrick Zhu, Berde Renewables chief executive officer, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, saying, “This partnership with Big E Food Corp. is one of several we’ve established this year, demonstrating our commitment to accelerating the energy transition here in the Philippines.
By helping companies like BEFC make the switch to renewable energy, we’re not only reducing carbon footprints but also providing them with a sustainable solution to manage rising energy costs.”
BEFC, known for manufacturing the popular Lemon Square snack brand, views the transition as a dual benefit for both the company and the environment.
EJ Vergel De Dios, head of corporate strategy and planning at BEFC, said, “By shifting to solar energy, we’re not only cutting down on emissions but also setting ourselves up for a more efficient and future-ready operation. It’s a reflection of our dedication to both our consumers and the environment.”
The collaboration comes on the heels of Berde Renewables’ partnership with the Magic Group of Companies, where they are installing a 729-kilowatt peak solar power system at the Magic Mall San Carlos in Pangasinan. This earlier project, also aimed at reducing carbon emissions, is expected to generate 983,690 kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually, equating to an 860-ton reduction in emissions over the next decade.
With the solar power purchase agreement with BEFC projected to be completed within a 12-month timeframe, both companies are poised to contribute meaningfully to the country’s renewable energy landscape, showcasing a robust model of corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship.
