Manila, Philippines — The Department of Energy (DOE) on Wednesday announced hosting the inaugural Philippine International Nuclear Supply Chain Forum (PINSCF) 2024 from 13 to 15 November.
The landmark event aims to gather key stakeholders from around the globe to discuss innovations and best practices in the nuclear energy sector.
The forum is set to attract representatives from countries with established nuclear energy programs, including the United States, Canada, France, Japan, and South Korea. These countries are expected to share their expertise and technological advancements, providing valuable insights as the Philippines seeks to develop a resilient and low-carbon energy system.
“The forum will showcase companies with proven records in constructing and maintaining critical energy infrastructure. This is a unique opportunity for the Philippines to learn from global leaders in nuclear technology,” the DOE said. The department emphasized that collaboration with international experts is crucial as the Philippines explores nuclear energy options to achieve economic growth while promoting environmental sustainability.
As global energy dynamics shift away from fossil fuels, nations are increasingly prioritizing energy independence and security. The DOE said the PINSCF will facilitate engagement with the international community while ensuring local stakeholders have a voice in the discussions.
The Philippines is actively working towards its first operational nuclear power plants, projected to begin by 2032 with an initial capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW). This capacity is expected to expand to 2,400 MW by 2035 and reach 4,800 MW by 2050, as outlined in the Philippine Energy Plan. The government views nuclear energy as a critical component in achieving a balanced energy mix, enhancing energy security, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
With energy needs projected to grow in the coming decades, the PINSCF is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of nuclear energy in the Philippines and the region, fostering collaboration that could drive significant advancements in the sector.
