Asian Eye Institute publishes ‘breakthrough studies’ ahead of World Sight Day

In anticipation of World Sight Day on 10 October, the Asian Eye Institute highlights significant advancements in eye health research by its leading ophthalmologists.

Dr. Robert T. Ang, head of cornea and refractive surgery services, recently published a study in BMC Ophthalmology that evaluates the differences in lens power measurements, emphasizing the need for enhanced surgical planning through advanced biometry technologies. Collaborating with fellows Paulo Hector C. Luz, Maria Isabel N. Umali, Michelle Marie Q. Araneta, and Emerson M. Cruz, the research aims to refine surgical outcomes.

Meanwhile, Dr. Maria Imelda Yap-Veloso, co-director of the glaucoma service, has garnered attention for her work published by Dove Medical Press, which focuses on the early detection of glaucoma. Her research identifies reliable biomarkers, aiding ophthalmologists in developing effective treatment strategies.

Both doctors, trained at Harvard, have made significant contributions to the field, with their works cited by major journals such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology and The Ophthalmologist Magazine. Their studies underscore the importance of standardized measurement techniques, enhancing the detection and treatment of eye conditions.

As part of the Asian Eye Institute Research Center, their efforts continue to pave the way for future innovations in eye care, reflecting over 23 years of commitment to advancing ophthalmology in the region.
