BGC launches contactless payments for bus riders with Mastercard partnership

Commuters in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) can now seamlessly pay for bus rides using their Mastercard prepaid, debit, or credit cards, as the Bonifacio Transport Corporation (BGC) introduces contactless payments. The new system, which allows cardholders to simply tap their Mastercard on BGC bus validators, eliminates the need for separate bus tickets.

This initiative is part of a pilot program launched under the partnership between Mastercard and AF Payments Inc. (AFPI), the company behind beep™ cards. BGC’s adoption of the technology is the first phase of a broader plan to introduce contactless payments across Metro Manila’s public transportation network, including EDSA buses and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

The move supports the government’s push to accelerate digital payment adoption, particularly in the transportation sector. It aims to simplify the commuting experience for Filipinos by reducing reliance on cash and multiple transit tickets. Additionally, the new payment system integrates Mastercard’s advanced security features, helping protect against fraud and card skimming through artificial intelligence and machine learning.

“This partnership demonstrates our commitment to improving mobility in the Philippines, making transit not only more convenient but also more secure for passengers,” said Simon Calasanz, country manager for Mastercard Philippines.

The introduction of contactless payments aligns with Mastercard’s global efforts to advance smart transit solutions, with similar systems already in place in cities like London, Sydney, and Singapore.
