ERC approves P2.34B NGCP power boost for Northern Mindanao

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved a P2.34-billion capital expenditure project by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), aimed at enhancing grid security and supporting economic growth in Northern Mindanao. The project, which will see the construction of the 230-kV Laguindingan substation, is expected to improve power supply to the Misamis Oriental I Electric Cooperative and support the Laguindingan Technopark.

In a notice of resolution released Thursday, the ERC set a deadline for NGCP to complete the substation by 31 January 2025, warning that failure to meet the timeline could result in administrative penalties. The substation will alleviate overloading issues at the Opol substation, which currently supplies power to the area, and address the limitations of the Tagoloan substation, where critical components require upgrading due to low interrupting capacity.

This is the latest in a series of approvals for NGCP, as the ERC also greenlit three additional major projects earlier this week, worth a total of P38.09 billion. The projects include the 500-kV Bolo-Balaoan transmission line designed to enhance power grid reliability in Luzon and integrate renewable energy projects costing P17.09-billion, and the 230 kV Northern Luzon loop that costs another P16.8-billion and which will upgrade transmission infrastructure in northern Luzon.

Additionally, the P4.2-billion Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay transmission project in the Visayas will improve power supply to the Panay islands, addressing overloading concerns.

These initiatives form part of NGCP’s ongoing effort to strengthen the national grid and support the country’s growing energy requirement.
