Philippines breaks ground on world’s largest solar farm

Terra Solar Philippines Inc., in collaboration with Meralco PowerGen Corp. and SP New Energy Corporation (SPNEC), has officially launched the groundbreaking ceremony for the MTerra Solar Project, set to become the world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage facility.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Meralco chairman and CEO Manny V. Pangilinan, along with other key leaders from Meralco, MGEN, SPNEC, and Actis.

President Marcos expressed his enthusiasm for the landmark project, stating, “Today we take a leap towards the future driven by innovation and sustained by our collective hope for a cleaner and greener Philippines,” said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as he led the ground breaking ceremonies.

President Marcos said the project would help the country lead in renewable energy while addressing the growing demand for electricity and the urgent need for sustainable energy sources.

Manila Electric Co. chairman and chief executive officer Manny V. Pangilinan led executives of Meralco, MGEN, SPNEC, and Actis were also at the event. The MTerra Solar Project, spanning 3,500 hectares across Nueva Ecija and Bulacan, will be a USD4.0 billion investment, one of the largest in the power sector. It  features 3,500 megawatts peak of photovoltaic capacity, along with a 4,500 megawatt-hours Battery Energy Storage System. The facility will be spread across five towns—Gapan, General Tinio, Peñaranda, and San Leonardo in Nueva Ecija, and San Miguel in Bulacan.

Once completed, the project is expected to supply clean energy to around 2.4 million households and avoid an estimated 4.3 million tons of carbon emissions annually, which is equivalent to removing over 3 million gasoline-powered vehicles from the road. This transformative initiative supports the government’s goal of achieving a 35 percent renewable energy share by 2030, positioning the Philippines as a global leader in clean energy.

“Numbers alone fail to articulate the full significance of this project, we are making a statement today that the Philippines is not only keeping pace with the global energy transition but more so express our intention, the Philippines’ intention to lead the migration from thermal to renewables,” Pangilinan said.“We will build, we will take action, and we will never stop daring. At the end, this is all showing the world what Filipinos can achieve when the public and private sectors work together with focus and urgency,” he added.
