Allianz PNB Life launches program boosting bike-based livelihoods

Allianz PNB Life (AZPNBL) is riding the wave of the country’s growing bike culture with the expansion of its Ride Safe advocacy. Launched in 2021, the program promotes bike safety and active transport, and now, Ride Safe 2.0 is driving an innovative initiative that not only supports the rise of eco-friendly commuting but also empowers communities through sustainable livelihood programs.

As bike commuting gains popularity in the Philippines, with over a third of Filipinos owning bicycles according to a 2023 Social Weather Station survey, the government and local units are investing in bike-friendly infrastructure. AZPNBL is stepping up with its new initiative that equips individuals with technical skills and business knowledge to launch bike repair enterprises, creating long-term economic opportunities.

In partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Pilipinas, Ride Safe 2.0 focuses on empowering selected beneficiaries, particularly women, in cities like Tacloban, Iloilo, and Cebu. Participants undergo training in bike maintenance, business management, and financial planning, and are provided seed capital to start their own bike shops.

“Ride Safe 2.0 is about fostering economic independence and sustainability through bike-related ventures,” said Ramon Lee Cualoping III, CEO of SOS Children’s Villages Pilipinas.

The program’s impact is already visible. In Tacloban, three beneficiaries have opened a successful bike repair shop, while in Cebu, Joseph Salonoy launched his bike repair business with seed capital from the program. Beneficiaries in Iloilo are also thriving, filling a crucial gap in bike repair services while contributing to their communities.

Joe Gross, CEO of Allianz PNB Life, highlighted the program’s role in fostering local entrepreneurship and resilience. “Ride Safe 2.0 is a testament to the power of collaboration and skills development, creating a ripple effect of positive change.”
