Meralco, KEPCO partner to boost smart metering

Manila Electric Co., the country’s largest power distributor, has tapped Korea Electric Power Corp. to help it promote wider smart meter usage in the Philippines.

Meralco signed a memorandum of understanding with KEPCO and its subsidiary, Knowledge Data Network, to help empower consumers and enhance the reliability of the power grid.

The MOU, signed during KEPCO’s Smart Metering Week 2024 in South Korea, focuses on knowledge exchange regarding digital technologies and the latest business trends in both countries. It also seeks to strengthen cooperation in the smart metering business and secure local partners in both South Korea and the Philippines.

“We are excited to collaborate with KEPCO and KDN to leverage new technologies and improve Meralco’s services,” said Marvin G. Gonsalves, Meralco’s vice president and head for Revenue Assurance and Metering Services.

This collaboration also includes training programs to help both parties deepen their understanding of smart metering technologies. Since 2011, Meralco has been integrating smart meters across its network to improve operational efficiency, grid reliability, and customer experience.

As part of its ongoing commitment to energy innovation, Meralco continues to invest in technologies that support its mission to provide stable, reliable, and safe electricity to its 8 million customers.
