Aboitiz Power energizes 45-MWp solar project in Central Luzon

Aboitiz Power Corp. has launched the 45-megawatt peak (MWp) Armenia solar project in Tarlac, marking a significant milestone of its renewable energy program in Central Luzon. Energized late last month by its renewable energy arm, Aboitiz Renewables Inc. (ARI), the Armenia solar farm is the company’s first solar facility in the region.

The project connects to the grid via an 11.58-kilometer transmission line that passes through five barangays, expanding the reach of sustainable energy in the area. While further project details were not disclosed, Aboitiz Power said this marks the company’s fourth operational solar plant following the completion of several other large-scale solar projects across the country, including the 59-MWp San Carlos Sun Power Inc. in Negros Occidental, the 94-MWp Cayanga-Bugallon facility in Pangasinan, and the 159-MWp Laoag power plant in Ilocos Norte.

Jimmy Villaroman, president of Aboitiz Renewables, expressed pride in the Armenia solar plant, saying, “The Armenia solar project gives Aboitiz Renewables and AboitizPower great pride, being able to contribute our part to the diversification of the Philippine power mix. We can be counted on to continue to help build and strengthen a cleaner energy system for the future.”

The company is also expanding its renewable energy portfolio beyond solar, with over 1,000 MW of disclosed projects across various energy sources, including hydro, geothermal, and wind. Aboitiz Power is actively pursuing further growth, aiming to add 3,600 MW of new renewable energy capacity by 2030, for a total of 4,600 MW of renewable energy.

In a related development, Aboitiz Renewables’ geothermal subsidiary, AP Renewables Inc., announced a new project in Laguna. The Bay battery energy storage system (BESS) project is set to become the Philippines’ first-ever hybrid geothermal and energy storage system. It has recently signed an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract with Shandong Electric Power Engineering Consulting Institute Co. Ltd.

This year Aboitiz Power spent P73 billion in capital expenditures, a significant increase from only P26 billion in 2023, underscoring its commitment to expanding renewable energy initiatives in the Philippines.
