Meralco teams up with NNIC for airport modernization

The New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) has partnered with Manila Electric Company (Meralco) to modernize Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), aiming to solve long-standing power reliability issues. The collaboration focuses on delivering sustainable and dependable energy solutions, ensuring the airport is equipped to meet the demands of modern aviation while enhancing operational efficiency and resilience.

NAIA has long struggled with aging infrastructure and power shortages that have disrupted operations and impacted passenger experiences. With the airport now under privatization, NNIC is prioritizing improvements, with power reliability as a key focus.

Meralco chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan highlighted the partnership’s role in supporting the tourism industry and economic growth, saying it would “help empower the tourism and travel industry, support economic growth, and enrich the travel experience for countless travelers.” NNIC president Ramon S. Ang echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the long-term operational improvements planned, including enhanced power systems, traffic decongestion, road expansions, and equipment upgrades.

Key initiatives include the construction of a state-of-the-art 115 kV substation, an underground power distribution network, and the installation of an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system at critical airport locations. These projects are set to ensure NAIA’s reliability and future-readiness, with full completion targeted by December 2026.

The NNIC-Meralco partnership marks a significant step toward transforming NAIA into a world-class airport, poised to support the Philippines’ economic growth and global aviation ambitions.
