De La Salle University basketball star Kevin Quiambao had a historic run in UAAP Season 87, clinching the Most Valuable Player title for the second consecutive year while capturing several major individual awards.
Quiambao, who will play in the Korean Basketball League after the UAAP Finals, was named to the Mythical Team, earned the Hyundai Exception Player of the Season award, won Skechers’ Best Performance of the Season, and was honored as the PSBankable Player of the Season. Along with the accolades, he also received trophies and cash rewards.
The exceptional performance of Quiambao, who is also known as KQ, places him in elite company as only the seventh DLSU player to win multiple MVP titles. He is also a member of Gilas, the Philippines’ National Basketball team.
KQ’s dominance on the court was mirrored by his teammate, Mike Phillips, who earned the Motolite award for the most double-digit performances and secured a spot on the Mythical Team.
The teammates’ stellar performances, notwithstanding, DLSU is in danger of failing to defend their UAAP crown as the Green Archers trail the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the best of 3 series. UP only needs to win Wednesday to regain the UAAP title they lost to La Salle last season.
A Green Archers win on Wednesday night will force a winner-take-all game on Sunday.
Joining Quiambao and Phillips on the prestigious Mythical Team are University of Santo Tomas’ Nic Cabanero, UP’s Joel Diomar “JD” Cagulangan, and Far Eastern University’s Mo Konateh, who was also named AIA Rebounder of the Season.
FEU’s Veejay Pre, another standout, claimed Rookie of the Year honors.
