Team Philippines secured a spot in the first playoff stage of the 2024 Men’s World Floorball Championship after defeating a resilient Canadian team, 4-3, Tuesday night at the Baltic Hall in Malmö, Sweden.
With the win, Team Philippines joins unbeaten Estonia as the top two qualifiers in Group C. Even a draw would have been enough to send the Filipinos through, as they held a half-point advantage over Canada following their earlier victory over Australia. Canada had been defeated by Estonia and only managed a draw against Australia.
The match began with strong performances from brothers Simon and Noah Sicat Larano, who each scored a goal within the first 11 minutes. Simon, who has consistently delivered throughout the tournament, was named the Philippine side’s best player in the match.
Canada fought back in the second quarter, with Alex Jette scoring their first point. Both teams turned the rest of the period into a defensive struggle, neither willing to give up another goal.
The third period saw Rhodell Esguerra break the deadlock, scoring for the Philippines, followed quickly by a goal from Lucas Werelius to extend the lead to 4-1. Though Canada managed to score twice in quick succession, it wasn’t enough to keep their playoff hopes alive.
With the victory, Team Philippines becomes the only team from the Asia-Oceania region to advance to the next round. Thailand and Australia, both eliminated, will compete for the 13th to 16th spots in the 16-nation tournament.
Next, Team Philippines faces Latvia on Wednesday, aiming for another historic victory, this time against a European squad.
