Power restored fully in Siargao after 13-day outage

The National Electrification Administration (NEA) said the Siargao Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Siarelco) has successfully restored electricity at its franchise area on Saturday following a major fault in its undersea cable network. The restoration comes after a challenging 13-day power outage that affected residents and businesses across Siargao Island.

The NEA said a four-megawatt modular generator set was deployed in Siargao to alleviate the power shortage. The genset is part of a collaborative effort by neighboring electric cooperatives to supply critical power to Siarelco while the undersea cables—damaged during the outage—are being repaired.

Antonio Mariano Almeda, NEA administrator, said additional power support was provided by the Agusan del Norte Electric Cooperative, Inc. which delivered another 8 MW worth of gensets to augment the power supply on the island. These temporary measures were crucial in keeping essential services operational during the repair process.

Almeda said the full repair of the damaged undersea line is still underway. NEA, as supervisor of 121 electric cooperatives nationwide, continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the power infrastructure in Siargao remains reliable and efficient.

opThe restoration marks a significant milestone for Siargao whose residents and local businesses faced prolonged disruptions. With electricity now fully restored, attention shifts to completing the repair work and ensuring long-term power stability for the island.
