PLDT and Smart boost cybersecurity with advanced tech solutions

PLDT Inc. and its wireless arm Smart Communications are ramping up efforts to combat mobile scams in the Philippines by investing in innovative technological solutions aimed at preventing fraud.

John Gonzales, VP and head of PLDT Enterprise Consulting Services, emphasized that the Philippines, a mobile-first nation where 64 percent of transactions are conducted via mobile, has become a major target for cybercriminals. Speaking at the “United Against Scams” panel, Gonzales highlighted the importance of industry collaboration, including efforts spearheaded by GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative, which aims to standardize APIs and enhance digital security.

PLDT and Smart plan to roll out key services next year, including Silent Authentication (a more secure alternative to OTPs), device location validation for fraud detection, and enhanced KYC (Know Your Customer) processes. These innovations aim to protect consumers from the rising tide of mobile-aided fraud.

Beyond technological solutions, Gonzales stressed the importance of continued collaboration with stakeholders, including the government, to address emerging cyber threats. The PLDT Group has already made significant strides, preventing nearly two billion malicious text messages and blacklisting almost a million scam-related numbers in 2024.

PLDT and Smart are also investigating the growing use of fake cell towers by scammers and working closely with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to address SMS fraud and other illegal activities.

Through these efforts and ongoing awareness campaigns, PLDT and Smart are positioning themselves at the forefront of the Philippines’ battle against cybercrime.
