Smart expands LTE coverage in Southern Leyte, boosting local agriculture and economic growth

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has significantly bolstered its network presence in Southern Leyte with the launch of new LTE sites in the town of Saint Bernard, offering key connectivity to the province’s agriculture-driven economy. This move is expected to enhance digital accessibility for local farmers, driving productivity and improving livelihoods.

“Technology is a game-changer for farmers in agriculture-based provinces like Southern Leyte,” said Debbie M. Hu, first vice president and Wireless Network head at Smart. “With reliable connectivity, farmers gain access to critical resources, from real-time weather updates to modern farming techniques, empowering them to make informed decisions that reduce losses and increase productivity.”

The expansion aligns with Smart’s broader strategy of supporting rural communities by integrating digital tools into agricultural practices. Through this initiative, farmers in Southern Leyte can now benefit from enhanced communication and technology, ultimately lifting the quality of life for farming families and driving local economic growth.

One of the key recipients of this expansion is the Tambis St. Bernard Farmers Irrigators Association, which expressed strong support for Smart’s efforts. “Communication and connectivity are becoming indispensable in today’s digital world,” said Danny Balasico, president of the association. “This network expansion enables us to integrate technology into our farming operations, benefiting both our livelihood and the broader community.”

In addition to LTE network upgrades, PLDT and Smart are deploying FarmTech packages across the country, aimed at digitizing farming practices. The Tambis St. Bernard group is the first in Southern Leyte to receive this tech-driven training kit. The FarmTech package includes a tablet, smartphones, a SmartBro pocket WiFi, an outdoor projector, a portable sound system, and essential learning materials. These tools will enable the group to train members in digital literacy, improving their farming techniques and operational efficiency.

“We are grateful to PLDT, Smart, and the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute for providing us with these invaluable tools,” said Balasico. “With the enhanced connectivity and resources, we are better equipped to educate our members on how to leverage technology for better farming practices.”

This expansion not only addresses the connectivity needs of Southern Leyte’s agricultural sector but also represents a significant step toward the region’s long-term digital transformation and economic resilience.
