Smart Communications blocks phishing site, warns of reward scam

Smart Communications has successfully blocked a phishing website targeting its customers, which impersonated the company to promote a fake rewards points program. The scam message, urging users to redeem ‘Smart points’ via a suspicious link, aimed to harvest personal information. Smart quickly intervened, blocking access to the fraudulent site, and reiterated that such a promo does not exist.

Lawyer Roy Ibay, VP of Regulatory Affairs at Smart, cautioned that criminal syndicates are using spoofed messages and fake cell tower devices to deceive users into clicking harmful links. These links lead to phishing sites that compromise personal data and login credentials. Smart assured customers that its official domain is smart.com.ph and that the company never sends clickable links in SMS communications.

In addition to combating phishing, Smart warned of a rise in account hijacking on popular messaging platforms, urging users to verify links received from contacts to avoid falling victim to login scams. The telco has bolstered its security systems, blocking over 2.3 billion malicious text messages in 2024 alone. Smart also advises customers to stay vigilant by not engaging with unsolicited texts and by using the #CyberSmart campaign’s tips to safeguard against fraud.

Customers are encouraged to report suspicious messages through Smart’s HuliScam portal or official social media channels. Smart remains committed to protecting its users from cyber threats and continues to strengthen its network against fraudulent activities.
