OMT boosts cargo handling with $25M investment in new cranes

Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT), operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) in Nigeria, has secured two new mobile harbor cranes (MHCs) worth USD25 million, enhancing its capacity to manage increasing cargo volumes and streamline port operations.

The acquisition is set to significantly improve container handling efficiency, reduce vessel turnaround times, and optimize overall cargo operations at the terminal. These upgrades come at a critical juncture as demand for reliable port services continues to grow, and the Nigerian government advances its blue economy vision for sustainable maritime growth.

In addition to the cranes, OMT has also unveiled a new container freight station (CFS) at Terminal 2. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to boost cargo processing and storage capabilities, ensuring smooth and efficient flows of goods through the terminal and providing vital resources for industry stakeholders in the region.

Jacob Gulmann, chief executive of OMT, emphasized the strategic importance of these investments: “These enhancements are a testament to our commitment to improving operational efficiencies and reinforcing Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade. We are grateful for the continued support from our government partners and stakeholders in making these advancements possible.”

This significant investment positions OMT as a key player in West Africa’s maritime sector, strengthening its role as a vital hub for containerized, oil and gas, and other cargo types. As the first terminal of call at the Onne Port Complex, located in the heart of Nigeria’s oil and gas free zone, OMT is a critical gateway to both the region’s energy sector and key hinterland markets.

The new equipment and facilities reflect ICTSI’s broader strategy to expand and modernize its global portfolio, which spans developed and emerging markets across Asia Pacific, the Americas, and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Through these strategic initiatives, ICTSI continues to support the growth of global trade and development in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
