President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Thursday the Senate now holds the responsibility of deciding how to proceed with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, his running mate in the 2022 election and former Education Secretary. While he had expressed concerns that the impeachment could distract from his legislative agenda, he said his role was limited to moral suasionI and that despite his pleas “natuloy pa rin.” “Now, I will just be a very interested observer,” he said. When asked about his eldest son, Ilocos Norte Rep. Sandro Marcos, signing the impeachment complaint, the president said he just told him to fulfill his constitutional duty. Sandro was first among 215 congressman to sign the complaint—it was directly sent to the Senate because it had more than there required 102 signatures—that included the VP’s threat to assassinate his parents.
