Globe to boost connectivity in remote areas with 100 new GIDA sites in 2025

Globe Telecom Inc. has announced plans to extend its network coverage to an additional 100 geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) by 2025, marking a significant step in improving connectivity across underserved regions in the Philippines.

Darius Delgado, Globe chief commercial officer, highlighted the transformative power of connectivity, emphasizing that expanding network infrastructure in GIDAs will provide access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for millions of Filipinos. “Connectivity is a fundamental enabler of progress,” Delgado said. “By expanding network infrastructure in GIDAs, we are unlocking access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for millions of Filipinos.”

Globe’s commitment to nationwide connectivity continues to grow, with 600 operational cell sites in place and plans to expand this number to 700 by the end of 2025. The expansion is part of the company’s broader efforts to provide digital access to even the most remote corners of the country.

This initiative is aligned with the efforts of the Connectivity Plan Task Force (CPTF), which is under the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) and includes cooperation between the country’s three major mobile network operators (MNOs). These operators have pledged to construct 1,050 new towers in GIDAs by 2028, a move expected to benefit around 12 million Filipinos living in remote areas.

The commitment of the country’s telecommunications sector reflects a collaborative, industry-wide approach to addressing digital inequality. By leveraging shared infrastructure and optimizing existing resources, the industry aims to enhance the accessibility and sustainability of digital services, positioning connectivity as a crucial enabler of inclusive economic growth and development.

Globe Telecom’s initiative underscores the critical role of private sector-government partnerships in expanding network coverage to underserved communities and making digital services more accessible for all Filipinos.
