MRT3 chief removed after escalator malfunction, triggering security overhaul

Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT3) general manager Oscar Bongon has been removed from his position following an 8 March escalator malfunction at the Taft Avenue Station that injured at least 10 passengers. Transport secretary Vince Dizon confirmed Bongon’s removal, citing the need for leadership changes within agencies impacting the public. Dizon also revealed that a replacement for Bongon has been recommended, pending presidential approval.

In response to the incident and other ongoing service challenges, Dizon announced plans to extend MRT3 operational hours by one hour, from 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm. He emphasized enhancing passenger safety and convenience, with immediate efforts to improve lighting in poorly lit areas and to build covered walkways connecting stations to other transport modes.

Dizon’s visit to MRT3 stations, including Taft, Ayala, and Shaw Boulevard, underscored a commitment to improving service, reducing commuter waiting times, and addressing feedback from passengers.

Further changes are anticipated as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) considers privatizing the operations and management of MRT3, with the government’s current agreement with Metro Rail Transit Corp. expiring this year. These steps highlight a shift toward improving rail passenger security and service quality, addressing critical concerns in light of recent incidents.
