PH advances nuclear energy plans amid growing power demand

The sustained push to incorporate nuclear energy into the country’s power generation mix is gaining momentum, with recent partnerships between the government, local academe, and U.S.-based organizations. This development is crucial as the country seeks to secure reasonably priced energy to meet growing demand.

Meralco, the country’s largest electric utility, has expressed optimism about the progress. Executive vice president Ronnie Aperocho highlighted ongoing efforts to train local engineers in nuclear energy operations, citing the company’s collaboration with U.S. institutions. Despite a setback from a previous partner’s bankruptcy, Aperocho confirmed that Meralco remains committed to pursuing nuclear power investments and hopes to secure a new partner soon.

Meanwhile, U.S.-based Valar Atomics is working on a prototype demonstration project for small-modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in the Philippines, which will serve as a proof of concept for future commercial reactors. Although not intended to be connected to the grid, this project aims to demonstrate the technology’s core physics and could prove pivotal in the country’s nuclear energy future.

In addition, a series of agreements between the EōS Organization, Fulbright Philippines, and local academic institutions like Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), aims to build a skilled workforce in nuclear engineering. These collaborations include scholarships, training programs, and exchange initiatives to enhance the country’s nuclear expertise, with funding reaching up to USD400,000.

The Philippines seeks to add 1,200 MW of nuclear power by 2032, but crucial legislative measures are still needed, including the creation of a nuclear regulatory agency and safety standards. These efforts highlight the country’s determination to explore nuclear energy as a solution for its future energy security.
