SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) has broken ground on its first battery energy storage system (BESS) facility in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), marking a significant step in the company’s renewable energy (RE) expansion strategy. Located at the 140-MW Binga hydroelectric power plant in Itogon, Benguet, the 40-MW Binga BESS is SNAP’s third energy storage project, following its 24-MW Magat BESS and the ongoing 16-MW Magat BESS Phase 2. By 2026, SNAP projects total battery storage capacity reaching 80 MW.
The project, supported by engineering, procurement, and construction agreements with GEDI China Energy, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group, is funded by loans obtained from the Bank of the Philippine Islands and BDO Unibank Inc. Its financial details have not been disclosed. SNAP president and CEO Joseph Yu said the Binga BESS demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, contributing to a more resilient and secure energy market in the Philippines.
SNAP, as a matter of strategy, is integrating complementary technologies into its hydroelectric portfolio that includes the 112.5 MW Ambuklao and 8.5 MW Maris hydroelectric plants. This aligns with Aboitiz Power’s goal to increase its RE capacity to 4,600 MW by 2030, ultimately achieving a total portfolio of 9,200 MW.
