Economic boost expected from Guicam Bridge connecting Olutanga Island to Zamboanga Sibugay mainland

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has made significant strides in the construction of the Guicam Bridge, an infrastructure project poised to drive economic growth in the Zamboanga Sibugay province. The agency has commenced installation of pre-stressed concrete deck girders for the vital inter-island bridge that will enhance connectivity between Olutanga Island and the mainland in Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay.

DPWH senior undersecretary Emil K. Sadain confirmed the successful installation of four pre-stressed concrete girders between abutment A and pier 1 as part of the P1.155 billion Guicam Bridge Project. The bridge, which spans the Canalizo Strait, will be 1.21 kilometers long and aligns with the administration’s “Bagong Pilipinas” initiative to foster island connectivity and regional development.

With a focus on economic advancement, Sadain highlighted the bridge’s capacity to boost mobility, commerce, and accessibility for the people of Olutanga Island and the broader Zamboanga Sibugay area. The bridge’s design includes a 540.80-meter span, a 6.7-meter width, and approach roads of 389.6 meters on the mainland and 277.62 meters on Olutanga Island.

The Guicam Bridge is expected to have a transformative effect on the local economy, especially for the agriculture and fisheries sectors, by facilitating more efficient transportation of goods and resources. With improved access to markets, these industries stand to gain significantly.

Additionally, the bridge is anticipated to play a critical role in enhancing regional stability by promoting integration and cooperation between the island and mainland communities.

Once completed in 2025, the Guicam Bridge will serve as a catalyst for increased economic activity, improved infrastructure, and enhanced peace and security, ultimately contributing to the region’s growth under the Build Better More program.
