Special LTFRB permits to boost commuter welfare for Lenten holidays

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued over 1,000 special permits to provincial buses in preparation for the surge of travelers during the Lenten holidays. In total, 1,018 special permits were granted as of 8 April designed to ease the anticipated increase in transport demand between 11 and 27 April, which will cover the Holy Week and the days after.

LTFRB chairman Teofilo Guadiz III said the additional buses are essential to meet the needs of commuters during this busy travel period. To ensure safety and compliance, the LTFRB has already begun random inspections of public utility vehicles (PUVs) and transport terminals. These inspections, which started on 7 April, will focus on verifying the validity of operators’ permits, fare matrices, vehicle markings, and safety accessories.

“The special permits granted aim to provide added capacity and ensure that passengers have enough transportation options for their holiday travel,” Guadiz said. He urged passengers to plan ahead, check travel schedules, and ensure that their tickets and other documents are in order to avoid any issues during their trips.

In addition to inspections, the LTFRB will monitor private terminals from 11 April to ensure the presence of help desks and sufficient staff to assist passengers. Guadiz also warned against using unregistered vehicles, which present significant safety risks, and reminded travelers to adhere to basic health guidelines. While face masks are no longer mandatory, he encouraged passengers to carry hygiene kits, alcohol, and face masks, especially in crowded areas.

The LTFRB’s regulatory forbearance during this period—granting additional permits and focusing on ensuring operational safety and capacity—highlights the agency’s commitment to commuter welfare during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.
