Bridge to boost Davao–Samal connectivity by 2028

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is accelerating work on the P20.84 billion Samal Island–Davao City Connector (SIDC) Project, aiming to transform inter-island connectivity and economic activity in the Davao Region.

Funded through an official development assistance (ODA) loan from China and implemented by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, the 4.76-kilometer SIDC bridge is slated for completion by 2028. Once operational, it will provide a vital four-lane link between Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS), reducing dependence on ferries and significantly cutting travel time.

DPWH senior undersecretary Emil K. Sadain reported that the project has reached over 12 percent completion, with construction currently centered on the bridge’s substructure. Structural milestones include the full installation of 74 bored piles on the Samal side and 73 of 110 piles on the Davao side. Pile cap work for the main navigation bridge is underway, supported by safety measures such as navigational buoys placed in collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard.

The SIDC will feature a 530-meter extradosed main span, extensive marine and land viaducts, and integrated ramps connecting to key roads in both cities. Road widening and land acquisition efforts are progressing steadily, with 83 percent of properties already secured.

“In line with President Marcos’ directive to accelerate critical infrastructure, DPWH is pushing forward with the SIDC to ensure timely and transparent delivery,” said Sadain.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to be a catalyst for regional growth, tourism, and improved mobility—marking a key achievement under the government’s Bagong Pilipinas vision.
