Ginebra San Miguel Inc. (GSMI), the world’s largest gin maker, is accelerating its sustainability efforts by eliminating plastic pourers from its entire product portfolio—a major step in reducing its plastic footprint.
The company confirmed it will complete the transition to pourer-free bottles by March 2025, starting with the updated packaging of Primera Light Brandy (750 mL). This follows earlier moves, including the removal of pourers from GSM Blue and the launch of GSM Premium Gin and Freedom Island Light Rum without plastic components.
It is unclear how much cost savings GSMI will realize from eliminating plastic pourers, but it would likely be substantial overtime given the cost of the product and volume of liquor the company produces.
Since 2021, GSMI has pursued sustainable packaging innovations. It transitioned its Ginebra San Miguel Hari (1L) from plastic to aluminum caps and reinforced its nationwide “Boteful Philippines” bottle retrieval program, aimed at reducing waste and promoting circular economy practices.
In 2024, GSMI achieved another milestone by reducing the size and thickness of the plastic Seal-O-Band used in Vino Kulafu, its Chinese wine offering. These initiatives led to a cumulative reduction of 111.5 metric tons in plastic usage this year alone.
“At GSMI, we are seriously committed to creating a more environmentally responsible future,” said Cynthia Baroy, OIC General Manager of GSMI. “This significant reduction in our plastic footprint is a crucial step in that direction—but we are not stopping here.”
Baroy added that the company will continue to innovate and explore eco-friendly packaging alternatives that meet environmental goals without compromising quality.
GSMI’s latest initiative reflects a broader shift toward responsible manufacturing in the beverage industry. By prioritizing sustainability while maintaining product integrity, GSMI positions itself not only as a market leader but also as a forward-thinking steward of environmental responsibility.
