AboitizPower breaks ground on new battery storage project

Nasipit, Agusan del Norte — Aboitiz Power Corp., through its subsidiary Therma Marine Inc. (TMI), has started groundwork for a new 48-megawatt (MW) hybrid battery energy storage system (BESS), signaling a strategic expansion in the company’s energy portfolio aimed at enhancing grid reliability and supporting renewable energy integration.

Announced in a statement Tuesday, the project will be built alongside the existing 100 MW TMI Mobile 2 oil-fired power plant in Lawis, Sta. Ana. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025, with commercial operations targeted for the second quarter of 2026. AboitizPower did not disclose the project cost, citing potential impacts on upcoming competitive bidding processes.

“This smart solution will help enable more grid stability and support the growing share of renewable energy in our grid,” said Ronaldo Ramos, AboitizPower transition business group COO for operated assets.

The Nasipit facility follows the company’s first hybrid BESS in Maco, Davao de Oro, which went online in 2022. These systems, integrated with oil-fired plants, provide fast-response ancillary services—such as dispatchable power during grid disturbances—critical for maintaining supply-demand balance.

The project is part of AboitizPower’s broader strategy to significantly scale up its renewable energy (RE) portfolio, aiming to add 3,600 MW of new RE capacity by 2030. The company plans to reach a total energy portfolio of 9,200 MW by then, pairing renewable assets with thermal capacity to meet the Philippines’ evolving energy demands.
