DOE orders immediate clearing of power infrastructure for election readiness

The Department of Energy (DOE) has mandated energy sector stakeholders to swiftly remove obstructions from power infrastructure nationwide, especially illegal campaign materials, as part of preparations for the 2025 National and Local Elections.

In a briefing on Monday, the DOE directed the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the National Electrification Administration (NEA), electric cooperatives (ECs), and private distribution utilities (DUs) to comply, citing public safety and the Anti-Obstruction of Power Lines Act. The order responds to Commission on Elections (Comelec) reports of widespread violations involving campaign materials placed on power lines and poles.

“These materials are not only unlawful but also pose serious risks of electrocution, fire, and power interruptions,” said Energy undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella, who also chairs the Task Force on Energy Resiliency.

The DOE urged energy firms to coordinate closely with local governments and Comelec’s Special Task Force Baklas to ensure the safe removal of obstructions.

Simultaneously, the Energy Task Force Election (ETFE), led by the DOE, affirmed full preparedness to ensure stable electricity and fuel supply before, during, and after the elections. The ETFE has conducted regular coordination with major energy players and government security agencies, with contingency measures and emergency response teams on standby.

“Through the ETFE, we have taken all necessary steps to support a smooth and credible election,” Fuentebella said.
