Meralco nears completion milestones of energy projects in Singapore, PH

Meralco affiliate Pacific Light Power Pte. Ltd. (PLP) is on track to complete its 600-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power plant in Jurong Island, Singapore by January 2029, signaling a major step in the company’s regional expansion. The project will feature Singapore’s first large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS), complementing its combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology, according to PLP’s official disclosures.

PLP, a joint venture between Meralco’s generation arm, Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen), and Hong Kong-based First Pacific, holds strategic value not only for its scale but also for its advanced capabilities in fast-start generation. Last year, PLP secured a 25-year contract from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority to build and operate 100 MW of fast-response, hydrogen-ready gas turbines—expected to be fully operational by mid-2025.

This expansion adds to PLP’s existing 830 MW natural gas facility in Singapore, strengthening its commercial footprint in the region’s competitive energy market.

Meanwhile in the Philippines, MGen’s affiliate Terra Solar Philippines Inc. is advancing what is poised to be the world’s largest integrated solar and BESS project, spanning Nueva Ecija and Bulacan. The 3,500 MW solar farm with 4,500 MWh of storage has already secured over USD600 million in equity from Singapore-based Actis and a record ₱150 billion syndicated loan from leading Philippine banks. The first phase of 2,500 MW is targeted for completion by 2026, with the remainder expected by 2027.

MGen also plans to add 85.2 MW of new solar capacity this year through projects in Isabela and Rizal, underscoring Meralco’s accelerating push toward a diversified and resilient clean energy portfolio.
