International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has announced the completion of Phase 1 of a quay upgrade at its Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) in the Port of Gdynia, aimed at boosting the port’s ability to handle larger vessels and expanding its commercial throughput capacity.
The USD42 million investment covered 400 meters of quay line, deepened to 15.5 meters, and included the installation of a third crane rail, new hydrotechnical structures, roads, and utilities. The work was completed on schedule despite complex environmental and operational conditions.
Wojciech Szymulewicz, CEO of BCT, emphasized the commercial significance: “The completion of Phase 1 lays the foundation from which major benefits will be made available to clients.” He noted that Phase 2 will elevate vessel accommodation and throughput potential, supported by the delivery of two to four new super post-Panamax cranes.
Phase 2, scheduled for completion by Q2 2026, will add another 400 meters of upgraded quay and bring the total investment across both phases to over USD84 million. When complete, BCT’s annual berth handling capacity is projected to rise to between 1.2 million and 1.6 million TEUs, up from 560,000 TEUs in 2024.
September 2025 will mark a key milestone, with 100 meters of the new quay and an expanded turning basin coming online, enabling BCT to handle vessels up to 400 meters long with a 14.7-meter draft.
The development is complemented by ongoing investments in digitalization and land-side infrastructure. BCT will implement the Navis N4 Terminal Operating System this October, laying the groundwork for automated gates and optimization tools such as Prime Route and Expert Docking. Additionally, the Port Authority of Gdynia plans to build a new internal road by 2026, linking a nine-hectare yard to the quay.
Hans-Ole Madsen, ICTSI SVP and EMEA head, hailed the collaboration: “Phase 2 will put BCT and the Port of Gdynia in a strong position to consolidate and expand traffic volume across deep-sea, short-sea, and feeder services.”
The expansion comes as BCT capitalizes on the completed Gdynia Port Rail Station, which has already increased rail cargo share to 17 percent of total volumes in 2024, with further growth expected.
