The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced Tuesday that the long-awaited rehabilitation of EDSA—now rebranded as the “EDSA Rebuild Program”—is set to begin in mid-June. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the significance of the project, noting that it marks the first major overhaul of the country’s busiest thoroughfare in 45 years.
“This needs to start now. As the President said, it’s been 45 years since EDSA was renovated. That’s why we’re calling it a rebuild, not just a rehab—it’s part of our ‘Build Better More’ initiative,” Dizon said.
The DOTr, in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), is finalizing plans to ensure smoother traffic flow during the reconstruction phase.
Dizon also revealed that the government is in talks with San Miguel Corp. (SMC) to suspend toll collection on parts of the Skyway to help ease traffic congestion while work on EDSA is ongoing. SMC’s Skyway networks continue to handle high traffic volumes, with Skyway Corp. recording an annual average daily traffic (AADT) of 276,850 and Skyway Stage 3 at 163,031 in 2024—both higher than the previous year.
The full traffic management plan and specific start dates are expected to be announced soon.
