Five new power generation projects with a combined capacity of 520.104 megawatts (MW) were green lit in April to undergo system impact studies (SIS), according to the Department of Energy (DOE).
The studies, conducted with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), are essential in assessing how proposed facilities affect grid operations and identify the necessary infrastructure upgrades, such as new transmission lines or substations.
Leading the group is JBD Water Power Inc.’s 200 MW wind project in Kalinga, followed by Freya Renewables Inc.’s 160 MW wind facility in Negros Occidental. Other projects include the Amihan Power Inc.’s 80-MW wind project and PAVI Green Camsur Renewable Energy Inc.’s 50-MW solar plant, both in Camarines Sur, as well as the 30-MW geothermal project by Energy Development Corp. in Sorsogon.
From January to April 2025, the DOE awarded SIS clearance to 40 projects, the majority or 30 of which were renewable energy and eight battery energy storage systems, with two more from thermal sources. The projects represent over 9,100 MW of capacity and 188.56 MWh in energy storage.
The DOE said an SIS clearance does not guarantee project implementation, with factors like financing, grid availability, and power purchase agreements posing significant hurdles.
