Chicken output rises in 1Q, prices dip slightly

Chicken production in the country reached 550.50 thousand metric tons, in  liveweight terms, in the first quarter of 2025, an 8.7 percent year-on-year increase from 506.28 thousand metric tons in the same period last year, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed.

This growth continues a three-year upward trend, underscoring the industry’s expanding capacity and robust demand.

Central Luzon remained the country’s top chicken producer, contributing 187,920 metric tons or 34 percent of total output. It was followed by CALABARZON with 104,910 metric tons, Northern Mindanao produced 46,570 metric tons,, Central Visayas added 27,700 metric tons, and SOCCSKSARGEN contributed 24,520 metric tons. Together, these five regions accounted for 71 percent of the nation’s chicken production during the quarter.

Broiler chicken dominated total output, accounting for 86 percent, followed by native/improved chicken at 12 percent. Culled layer chicken and gamefowl for breeding comprised 1.5 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. Central Luzon led in broiler and culled layer chicken production, while Northern Mindanao topped native/improved chicken output. CALABARZON had the highest volume of gamefowl culled for breeding.

As of March 31, total chicken inventory stood at 218.81 million birds, up 0.9 percent from a year earlier. Broiler and layer chicken stocks grew 1.4 percent and 6.7 percent, respectively, while native/improved and gamefowl populations declined. Central Luzon again led in inventory with 40.49 million birds, followed by CALABARZON and Northern Mindanao.

Despite the production increase, the average farmgate price of broiler chicken dipped slightly to ₱125.16 per kilogram, down 0.8 percent from the previous year. The price decline reflects stable supply amid strong regional production and inventory growth.
