AirAsia PH names new chief amid expansion push

AirAsia Aviation Group Limited (AAAGL) has named Captain Suresh Bangah as president and general manager of AirAsia Philippines, marking a pivotal leadership shift as the low-cost carrier prepares for a new phase of sustainable and profitable expansion.

Captain Suresh succeeds Ricky Isla, who retires after six years at the helm and will continue to serve as chief advisor to ensure a smooth transition. A veteran with nearly three decades in aviation, Suresh most recently served as AAAGL’s group director of flight operations and has held several key posts at AirAsia X Berhad (AAX).

“Captain Suresh steps into this role at an important juncture,” said Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AAAGL. “With his strong operational and leadership track record, he is well positioned to build on Ricky Isla’s legacy as we strengthen regional integration, particularly in the Philippines—a vital growth market for us.”

Under Isla’s leadership, the airline weathered the pandemic’s turbulence, stabilizing operations and restoring brand confidence. In 2024, AirAsia Philippines carried nearly seven million passengers. The airline now aims to grow its fleet to 19 aircraft in 2025, targeting sustained 90 percent load factors amid rising travel demand.

Suresh emphasized alignment with national aviation and tourism goals, while acknowledging global headwinds such as supply chain disruptions, fuel price volatility, and environmental challenges. “We are committed to elevating our operations and guest experience while supporting broader connectivity and infrastructure development in the Philippines,” he said.

The appointment underscores AAAGL’s broader strategy to enhance digital services, expand ancillary revenue streams, and solidify its position in a competitive Southeast Asian market.
