Smart coal: Aboitiz Power rolls out AI-driven upgrades

Aboitiz Power Corp. is expanding its use of artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics in coal-fired power plants across Luzon and Visayas as part of its modernization initiative, Project Arkanghel. The company’s Transition Business Group is leading the effort to transform conventional power facilities into smart plants, improving reliability and operational efficiency.

According to Aboitiz Power COO Celso Caballero, implementation in the Visayas will be completed this year, with expansion to Luzon expected by 2026. The project is already in operation at the 300 MW Therma South Inc. plant in Davao City and the 340 MW Therma Visayas Inc. plant in Cebu.

Project Arkanghel incorporates advanced technologies such as digital twins, real-time asset health monitoring, and early anomaly detection. These AI-driven tools are designed to reduce downtime, enhance fuel efficiency, and extend plant operation intervals. Aboitiz Power partnered with Thailand-based REPCO NEX Industrial Solutions to roll out the system.

While continuing to optimize its thermal portfolio, Aboitiz Power is also pursuing an ambitious target of 4,600 MW in renewable energy capacity by 2030, aiming for a total generation portfolio of 9,200 MW.
