Andrew Tan’s Emperador steps up ESG game in Europe

Emperador Inc., the liquor conglomerate led by tycoon Andrew Tan, announced on Monday a series of sustainability-focused initiatives across its operations in Spain and the United Kingdom, marking a significant move toward environmental stewardship in the global spirits industry.

Grupo Emperador Spain (GES), the company’s Spanish arm, is deploying cutting-edge agricultural technologies such as intelligent irrigation systems and environmental sensors to optimize vineyard efficiency while reducing water usage. Drones and falconry are also being employed for precision monitoring and natural pest control, further minimizing chemical inputs in grape cultivation.

“These initiatives reinforce our strong commitment to integrating sustainability and environmental stewardship across our entire value chain,” said Winston Co, Emperador president and CEO.

Emperador has also begun replacing traditional combustion forklifts with electric alternatives and is ramping up renewable energy use through solar panel installations and biogas recovery systems in Spain.

In the UK, its subsidiary Whyte and Mackay is implementing major green energy transitions. The Jura Distillery now runs on a biomass boiler, slashing carbon emissions by an estimated 5,000 tons annually. Meanwhile, the Invergordon Distillery has shifted to a fully carbon-neutral energy supply powered by wood pellets. The development of a new bioenergy center is expected to further cut 20,900 tons of CO2e emissions by 2026.

In the Philippines, the company continues its renewable energy rollout with solar power systems at its manufacturing and glass plants, collectively reducing its carbon footprint by over 2,500 metric tons of CO2e annually.

The wide-ranging initiatives underscore Emperador’s broader strategic alignment with global ESG (environmental, social, and governance) standards and reflect growing investor and consumer demand for sustainability in the alcoholic beverages sector.
