The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has received the prestigious “Best New Banknote or Banknote Series” award from the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA) for its First Philippine Polymer Banknote Series (FPPBS), recognized during a ceremony in Bangkok on 28 May.
The award marks international recognition of the BSP’s innovation in currency design, highlighting the FPPBS’ cutting-edge security features, integration of local cultural and natural elements, and sustainability. IACA praised the series for “redefining currency security in the Philippines” and for showcasing “the Philippines’ rich culture and natural heritage” through native flora and fauna depicted on the notes.
“This recognition affirms our commitment to innovation in currency design, ensuring that our banknotes meet the global standards of security and sustainability,” said BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto E. Tangonan.
The polymer notes — first issued in 2022 with the 1000-piso denomination and expanded in 2024 — co-circulate with traditional paper bills. These notes offer enhanced durability, are more resistant to contaminants, and carry a significantly lower environmental impact.
The honor is seen to boost public trust and awareness of the BSP’s efforts to modernize the country’s currency, while reinforcing the global relevance of Philippine currency design.
