Minor van incident at NAIA spurs safety measures review

A minor vehicular incident involving a Toyota Hi-Ace Super Grandia at NAIA Terminal 2 last Friday has prompted The New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) to expand safety improvements across the airport complex, despite no reported injuries or damage.

According to NNIC, the van struck a curb between Bays 13 and 14 while the driver was avoiding another vehicle. Airport security and police responded immediately, safely removing the vehicle and forwarding it to the Airport Police Division for routine documentation.

While Bays 13 and 14 lack bollards, NNIC said the design is consistent with prior risk assessments and current airport safety standards. However, the area has now been included in a recently completed audit of bollard placements following a fatal crash at Terminal 1 last month.

NNIC, which took over airport operations in September 2024, is now reinforcing existing bollards and adding new ones in high-priority zones. It is also coordinating with authorities to bolster airport-wide safety infrastructure.
