PNR reopens Binahan Bridge, restores key south Luzon rail link

The Philippine National Railways (PNR) has completed the restoration of the Binahan Bridge in Ragay, Camarines Sur, nearly two months after Typhoon Kristine caused extensive damage. The bridge’s repair is a key milestone in the broader effort to rehabilitate and expand rail services across Southern Luzon.

In a bid to improve infrastructure resilience, PNR replaced traditional wooden rail ties with more durable synthetic alternatives. The accelerated restoration aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to fast-track the rehabilitation of PNR’s South Operations, according to PNR officials. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is concurrently exploring funding options for the larger 556-kilometer South Long Haul (SLH) Project.

The restored bridge paves the way for the reactivation of the 99-kilometer Naga-Tagkawayan line, enhancing connectivity from Naga to Sipocot and extending through Ragay to Tagkawayan, Quezon—areas long underserved by rail transport.

“My sincere thanks to all the hardworking men and women of PNR who are working tirelessly to restore the Binahan bridge,” said PNR general manager Deovanni S. Miranda. “We will continue to revitalize the existing PNR lines… to provide safe, reliable, and affordable mass transportation for our fellow Filipinos.”
