The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) aims to reduce broadband internet costs in the Philippines by up to 50 percent over the next three years, DICT Secretary Henry R. Aguda told journalists at the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines or EJAP Infrastructure Forum. The initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to improve nationwide digital connectivity, particularly in underserved areas.
Aguda said the cost reduction will be driven by increased market competition, infrastructure sharing, and recent policy reforms such as the Konektadong Pinoy Act. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to inclusive digital access, highlighting the activation of nearly 19,000 Free Wi-Fi sites and the rollout of over 3,000 kilometers of fiber backbone connecting 20 provinces.
“These are not ceremonial accomplishments,” Aguda noted, underscoring that the agency’s P9 billion investment over the next three years will expand free internet nationwide. By 2028, the DICT aims to connect all 10,875 underserved barangays, holding telcos accountable and ensuring more affordable, secure internet for every Filipino household.
