Manila Water nears completion of East Bay intake facility

The Manila Water Co. Inc. on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to complete the Raw Water Intake Structure of the East Bay Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant by the third quarter of 2025, underscoring the project’s strategic importance in enhancing Metro Manila’s water security.

In a statement, the utility firm reported that the intake facility—part of the ₱525-million infrastructure initiative launched in June 2023—is now 92 percent complete. Once operational, the structure will draw up to 200 million liters per day from Laguna Lake, benefiting more than two million residents in Pasig, Pateros, and Taguig.

“This milestone marks not just engineering progress, but a crucial step in our long-term strategy to diversify Metro Manila’s water sources and reduce dependence on Angat Dam,” said Jeric Sevilla, group director for Corporate Communications at Manila Water.

Beyond the intake structure, the project also includes major marine works such as the installation of 1000mm-diameter submarine pipelines designed to transport raw water from offshore sources to the treatment plant. A new pump and electrical room is under construction, equipped with automation technologies and advanced control systems to improve operational efficiency.

Sevilla emphasized the collaborative approach driving the project forward. “We greatly appreciate the support of our partner local government units and stakeholders. Their cooperation has been vital in staying on track with our timeline.”

The East Bay Phase 2 project is part of Manila Water’s broader policy direction to strengthen water resilience in the East Zone service area, which includes portions of Metro Manila and the province of Rizal.
