BSP-led forum renews push vs financial scams

The Financial Sector Forum (FSF), led by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), has launched the 2025 edition of its flagship campaign Protect Your Money (PYM), signaling a renewed push to enhance consumer confidence amid the country’s evolving digital financial landscape. Analysts say the initiative could support monetary policy by reinforcing financial system trust and consumer participation.

Held at the BSP headquarters on 17 June, the campaign—tagged “I am a smart financial consumer”—aims to counter fraud and scams by spreading financial literacy through a multi-platform approach, including social media, SMS, radio, and ATM-based outreach. Educational content will highlight scam red flags, safe transaction tips, and avenues for redress.

BSP monetary board member Jose L. Querubin, standing in for governor and FSF chairman Eli M. Remolona Jr., emphasized that informed consumers help foster a resilient financial system. “The objective is simple but clear—to enable Filipinos to confidently say, ‘I am a smart financial consumer,’” Querubin said.

The PYM campaign, now in its twelfth year, is jointly implemented by FSF members: the BSP, Insurance Commission (IC), Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC), and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It targets financially underserved segments such as retirees and overseas Filipinos and leverages legislation like the Financial Products and Services Consumer Protection Act (FCPA) and the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act (AFASA).

Deputy governor Chuchi G. Fonacier said the initiative aligns with the BSP’s broader goals of fostering financial stability and inclusion: “We are proud to support the refreshed PYM campaign—now sharper, more digital, and more relevant than ever.”

Observers note that bolstering consumer financial awareness contributes indirectly to monetary policy by encouraging more secure financial behaviors, expanding formal financial system usage, and enhancing trust—a key variable in demand-side stability.
