The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has increased the student fare discount on LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 from 20 percent to 50 percent, effective starting today, Friday. The move, announced by Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon at LRT-2 Antipolo Station, follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ease students’ transportation costs for the school year.
The expanded discount applies daily, including weekends and holidays, and will remain in effect until 2028. It covers all students, including those enrolled in postgraduate programs.
Dizon emphasized the policy’s direct benefit to families, particularly those with children attending schools in Manila’s University Belt. “This is a big help to families, especially parents who are struggling to send their children to school,” he said, adding that the savings could be used for other educational needs.
The initiative is a joint effort among DOTr, MRT-3, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), and Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC).
