PLDT Inc. has launched a grassroots campaign aimed at bolstering cybersecurity and protecting critical telecommunications infrastructure by engaging local communities. The initiative debuted in Barangay Bangkal, Makati City, with the active involvement of PLDT’s Asset Protection Division, led by Willie Antalan, and local officials including Barangay Captain Virgilio Hilario III.
Designed to strengthen on-ground defenses against frequent theft and vandalism—particularly of copper cables—the program empowers barangays with tools, training, and awareness to serve as the first line of defense for telecom networks. PLDT reported nearly 1,000 incidents of infrastructure loss in 2024 alone, underscoring the commercial urgency of the campaign due to frequent service disruptions and business losses.
“This is a shared responsibility,” Antalan emphasized, noting that local vigilance is key to maintaining network reliability. PLDT provided patrol tools like flashlights and raincoats to local watchmen, while also holding dialogues with residents on the importance of protecting telecom assets and maintaining service continuity.
The program, described by PLDT Security Central Command chief Col. Wilfredo F. Gonio as the start of a broader rollout, will expand to other communities in Metro Manila and beyond. The initiative underpins PLDT and Smart’s broader goal of safeguarding infrastructure vital to national connectivity and economic resilience.
