NNIC acts fast after overcharging incident at airport

New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC), the private operator of Ninoy Aquino International Airport, has swiftly rolled out stricter transport and passenger protection measures following a viral incident involving an unauthorized taxi grossly overcharging a traveler for an inter-terminal ride.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has dismissed five Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) police officers allegedly linked to taxi extortion schemes. Although airport police fall under MIAA, NNIC is collaborating with the agency while reinforcing its own controls.

NNIC has initiated a full audit of accredited transport operators, improved surveillance with more CCTVs and personnel, and expanded its centralized hub for app-based ride services at Terminal 3. It had already increased inter-terminal shuttle frequency and now plans to roll out clearer, tamper-resistant accreditation markings and a digital passenger reporting tool.

NNIC president Ramon S. Ang underscored the urgency of the reforms: “Incidents like this should never happen… Passengers deserve a safe, fair, and stress-free experience at NAIA.”
