SM Prime Schools Switch to Cleaner Power via RAP

SM Prime Holdings Inc. has shifted two of its educational institutions — National University (NU) and Asia Pacific College (APC) — to cleaner electricity through the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) said on Wednesday.

Under the program, the learning institutions will now source their 967.13-kilowatt electricity requirement from Advent Power, an energy provider under the Aboitiz Group. RAP enables power consumers with small individual loads to combine demand and contract energy from suppliers of their choice, often at more competitive rates.

ERC chairman Monalisa Dimalanta emphasized the move’s broader impact: “The objective of RAP goes beyond lowering costs… It is also about reinvesting those savings in better classrooms, smarter technology, improved facilities, and potentially, even more affordable tuition.”

The shift aligns with SM Prime’s efforts to improve both environmental sustainability and campus development. NU has signaled intentions to expand its RAP participation to 40 additional sites nationwide.

As of mid-June 2025, a total of 9.6 megawatts has been aggregated under RAP, reflecting growing interest among institutions, including the Philippine Cultural College, which pioneered the program’s use in the academe earlier this year.
