DPWH: Bucana Bridge on track for 2025 finish

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced over the weekend that the Bucana Bridge Project is nearing completion, with 92 percent already achieved and full completion on track by the end of 2025.

DPWH senior undersecretary Emil K. Sadain confirmed that the China Aid-funded infrastructure, officially known as the China Aid Localized Project for the Davao River Bridge, is progressing steadily at 3–4 percent a month. The four-lane, 480.2-meter extradosed bridge — part of a 1.34-kilometer total span including access roads — is a critical link to the Davao Coastal Road and a key element of the region’s evolving transport policy.

Sadain emphasized the bridge’s role in easing traffic congestion in Davao City and enhancing regional mobility throughout the Davao Region. “It strengthens the road network, making travel faster and more efficient,” he said.

Funded through a ₱3.126 billion China Aid Grant under the Official Development Assistance (ODA) program, the project is positioned as a flagship under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. ‘s “Bagong Pilipinas” infrastructure vision, symbolizing international cooperation and inclusive development.

A major milestone was achieved on June 26 with the installation of all stay cables — one of the most complex components of the project. Additional progress includes structural connections between key piers, roadbed preparation, drainage work, and slope protection.

Final deck connections are scheduled for July 2025, signaling the near completion of what is set to become a transformative infrastructure asset for Mindanao.
